Why Cats Love Fish: The Science Behind Your Cat's Seafood Obsession

Is It Natural for Cats to Love Fish?

Walk down any pet food aisle and you'll find dozens of fish-flavoured cat products — and for good reason. Most cats are drawn to fish with an almost magnetic intensity. But is this a natural instinct, or something we've conditioned into them? The answer is a bit of both.

The Evolutionary Angle

Domestic cats descended from desert-dwelling wildcats, which means fish wasn't historically a core part of their diet. However, cats are obligate carnivores — they must eat animal protein to survive. Their senses are finely tuned to detect the smell and taste of protein-rich foods, and fish happens to be one of the most intensely aromatic protein sources around.

The strong smell of fish triggers a cat's hardwired response to seek out high-protein prey. It's not that cats evolved to eat fish specifically — it's that fish hits all the sensory markers their brains associate with a nutritious meal.

Why the Smell Matters So Much

Cats have roughly 200 million odour receptors in their noses (compared to about 5 million in humans). Smell is their primary tool for evaluating food. Fish — especially oily, strong-smelling varieties like salmon, mackerel, and sardines — produces volatile compounds that are almost impossible for a cat to ignore.

This is why freeze-dried fish treats are so effective even with picky cats. The freeze-drying process concentrates the natural aroma, making the scent even more potent than fresh fish. For cats who've lost some appetite or sense of smell with age, this intensity can make all the difference.

The Nutritional Pull

Beyond smell, cats may be drawn to fish because it delivers exactly what their bodies need:

  • High animal protein — essential for muscle maintenance and energy
  • Taurine — an amino acid cats cannot produce themselves, found naturally in seafood, critical for heart and eye health
  • Omega-3 fatty acids — support skin, coat, joints, and brain function
  • B vitamins — support nervous system health and metabolism

In short, a cat's love of fish may be partly instinctive and partly their body recognising a genuinely good nutritional source.

Is Fish Always Good for Cats?

Fish is beneficial in moderation, but a few caveats apply:

  • Don't make it the only protein — A diet exclusively of fish can lead to vitamin E deficiency or mercury accumulation over time. Variety is important.
  • Avoid raw fish regularly — Raw fish contains an enzyme (thiaminase) that breaks down thiamine (vitamin B1), which can cause neurological issues with long-term feeding. Freeze-dried fish is a safer alternative as the process deactivates this enzyme.
  • Watch for fish allergies — Rare, but some cats can develop sensitivities. Introduce new proteins gradually and monitor for reactions.

The Freeze-Dried Difference

Freeze-dried fish treats give your cat the flavour and nutrition of real fish without the risks of raw feeding. No thiaminase concerns, no spoilage, no artificial preservatives — just pure, concentrated seafood goodness your cat is biologically wired to love.
